MSCITS Student FAQ

Check here for answers to frequently asked questions.

Connectivity

Q: How can I get my Internet connection setup in my dorm room.

A: The connection in the dorm room is already active. All that you should have to do is setup your Network Settings. Instructions can be obtained from the MSCITS Desktop Support desk on the 6th floor of the library or from the Students/Network Access/Dorm page.

Q: What is the availablity of High-Speed internet access?

A: The dorm rooms are connected to the Central IT network. For students living off campus, there are several options for broadband access. Charter Communications is the cable provider for the city. They offer cable modem access to the Internet. Southwestern Bell, Speakeasy.net, and Direct TV offer DSL services. DSL Reports is a great site for comparing broadband services.

Q: How do I logon if I do not have an account?

A: The classrooms are for use by people affiliated with the Washington University Medical Center. Only students attending programs offered by WUSM will have accounts on the computers. All others must use mcguest as the username and Visitor1 as the password.

Q: I want some equipment delivered in the hospital and the operator gave me your phone number.

A: If you are a BJC employee please call 362-5668 for BJC media services. If you are affiliated with WU we'll be happy to help you. Check our web page that describes projections services at The Library/Departments/MSCITS/Projection Services.

Q: Do you make slides?

A: No, call MedPic at 2-3320.

Q: Where can I scan images and documents?

A: There are 4 multimedia computers with scanners and CD burners on the first floor of the Becker Medical Library. There is also one scanner on the 3rd and on the 4th floors of the FLTC building.

Q: I want to put some video clips into my PowerPoint presentation....how can I do that?

A: Jonathan Eberle is our Multimedia Specialist. His phone number is 747-0034 and his email address is eberlejo@msnotes.wustl.edu. He's the one to go to for all of your video and multimedia questions. If you need to have a video created or produced, we have shooting, editing and video consulting services available.

Q: Do any of the auditoriums have an Internet connection?

A: Yes, there is an Internet connection at the podium in Connor, Cori, Erlanger, Holden, Moore, Wohl and Clopton auditoriums.

Q: I'm going to a conference in Florida. Can I borrow a laptop and projector?

A: No. MSCITS Audiovisual equipment does not leave the WUMC campus. Please contact the conference coordinator to make arrangements for equipment for your presentation.

Q. Can I check out presentation equipment such as laptop computers, LCD projectors, and overhead projectors for my lab or class presentation?

A. Yes, equipment such as laptops equipped with Microsoft PowerPoint, LCD projectors for displaying presentations on computers, overhead projectors for transparencies, slide projectors, flip charts and more are available for check out. Equipment is available free of charge to Washington University Medical Center students and faculty on a reservation basis. Remember to call ahead in advance to reserve your equipment, as we have limited stock, and availability is not guaranteed without a reservation. For more information on equipment availability, call 362-2793 or come to the MSCITS-AV counter on the sixth floor of the Medical Library.

EMail

Q: Do I have a size limit on my email account?

A: YES. All students have a mail file size limit of 1GB. When you get to 950MB you will get daily reminder messages indicating that you are getting close to your limit. When you reach your limit you will be able to read and receive mail but will not be able to send any new messages.

Q: What program do I use to read and send e-mail?

A: Web mail at http://wusmmail.wustl.edu is the most frequently used. You will have full feature functionality with Internet Explorer 7 or higher, and you may use other browsers in a "light" mode. Microsoft Outlook and Entourage are the "approved" email clients.

Q: Can I forward my WU email to another account?

A: No. We do not allow students to forward to other accounts outside of the University. This is to mitigate the security risk of potential sensitive information residing outside of the University systems and firewalls.

Printing

Q: I was printing a document and it stopped without printing everything. Why?

A: You more than likely ran out of money on your account. The print server is setup to print your documents until you run out of money. When you run out it truncates the document. So if you only have enough money to print a four page document and you send a 6 page document, the printer will print the first four and discard the rest.

Q: I sent a job to the printer and the printer did not print it out.

A: One of two things could be happening...

    1. You have no money on your account. Or
    2. You are logged in as MCGUEST. The MCGUEST account does not have the ability to print to the student use printers which are set as the default printers.

Q: Can people who aren't medical students (such as faculty and staff of the WUMC) print documents in the Medical Library computer lab?

A: Yes. If you are not a medical student, you can purchase a copy card at the Circulation Desk. While in the lab, simply log into the computers as a guest, using the login name and password "mcguest" (without the quotes). When you are ready to print your document, simply select the print command from the file menu, and when the print dialog box appears, select "Public Printer" in the pull-down printer selection menu. Then choose "Print."

Remember to remove your copy card before leaving!
