Wireless Access-Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I get a wireless account?

All Washington University School of Medicine students are eligible for free wireless accounts. To request an account, fill out the student account request form.

How long does it take to create the account once I fill out the request form?

It will usually take two days or less. If you have not received any notification from MSCITS on your account after three days, please ask what the status is.

What do I need to use the wireless network?

You will need either laptop or a Windows CE device or a Macintosh with OS X. Please note that Macintosh systems without OS X and Palm are not supported at this time. You will also need a wireless network card. The recommended network cards are the Agaere Gold and the Orinoco Gold cards (not silver). Other wireless cards may work with the system but compatibility cannot be assured in the long term. You may either purchase your own network card or purchase the card from MSCITS. The price will fluctuate based on our actual cost.

Is there software that I need to put on my computer to use the wireless network?

After your wireless account has been created you will be notified and must bring your computer or PDA to MSCITS for the setup. We will install the software and set up the configuration for you. We will also test and show you how to use it.

How long will it take to install the software and setup my laptop or PDA?

The usual setup time is about 15-20 minutes or less. Of course this will depend on how many people we are helping at the time. The recommended process is to bring the device to MSCITS and plan to leave it for a short period of time. Many students work in the main computer lab or drop it off before class while we are setting the device up.

Will Lotus Notes work with the wireless network?

Yes. The wireless network will enable you to do anything that you would normally do with a wired network.

How fast is the network?

The speed of the wireless network is 11 MB. As the number of users increases though the speed will be reduced proportional to the number of users that are utilizing the wireless network at any given time.

Where can I use the wireless network?

Currently the entire Becker Medical Library has wireless access, the first year carrels on McDonnell Science, the second and third floor of Olin Dorm, and the student lounge on the first floor of Olin Dorm. We are looking for new places the wireless network will be beneficial all of the time. If you would like to suggest a new location please feel free to contact MSCITS at 362-7798 or email us at servicedesk@msnotes.wustl.edu.

If I have a PDA and a laptop computer, can I use the same network card for both devices or do I have to purchase two separate cards?

If you have a laptop and a PDA you will be able to use the same wireless network card for both. You must specify on the request form however that you will need both types of accounts.

Can I use the wireless card with my home wireless network or lab wireless network?

You will be able to set up several configurations to use other networks if you would like. Whether or not it will work depends on the requirements of the individual network and the type of security on them.
